Gingerbread Officially Announced for Galaxy Tab

The long wait is almost over! Samsung finally announced a soft release date for Gingerbread. It will start in mid-May in UK and Nordic countries. The rest of the world will get their update rolled out according to their regional plan. It is fairly safe to assume that most people will have 2.3.3 on their Galaxy Tab in the next month.

The update will apparently be pushed out via Kies software on the computer. Hopefully there will be an OTA (over the air) option available, but there is no official word on that.

Samsung also tells us that the Gingerbread will offer faster performance and upgraded usability.

Are you excited about the Gingerbread update? If you already have updated, then what do you think?

Why do we have to wait for this lame regional plan? Apple, Microsoft and just about everyone else can roll out an update for their operating systems for the whole world simultaneously. Why is this too difficult for Samsung?

My laptop, on which Kies is installed, has 3 times put up a message saying a firmware update is available for my Galaxy Tab and that I should connect it and run Kies to update it.
    .
Each time I do so, I am told that it has the latest firmware (which is 2.2).
    .
I did some web research and found that the update to 2.3 that has been distributed now to the UK (and by now presumably elsewhere) is for the stock ROMs, ie to devices identified as PT-1000CWAXEU.
    .
My device says it is a PT-1000CWACPW, where CPW means Carphone Warehouse.
    .
This is strange because my device was bought SIM-free (from Tesco) and nothing on paper or on the device itself indicates anything to do with Carphone Warehouse. There appear to be no customisations. Nothing is restricted.
    .
So what do I do now? Just wait? Complain to Samsung? Am I dependent on Carphone Warehouse providing some sort of customised version of 2.3?
    .
What makes it even stranger is that I did receive and install a previous update (some minor change within 2.2) without any fuss during the last few months.
    .
As for ‘doing it myself’ via XDA Developers et al, last time I looked, they were saying that their 2.3 was buggy. I want the official version, not some hack. Also I am wary of downloading rooting and flashing software and images from web sites when I have no way of knowing whether I can trust them and they all warn that if I brick my device it is not their problem.

btw, freaking Sammy didn’t release update to 2.3 in Middle East, Asia, most of Europe!
i emailed them and they said it will be released 22 week 2011 which already passed and when i emailed them again they said “we faced some unexpected issues and our engineers are working to fix it, release date yet to be announced”! WTF, Samsung!
they can’t even finish off a task as simple as keeping their promise, forget abut all the months they wasted to prepare the update. my last Samsung device for sure.

Why does nobody allow for the non sim carded version of the tab , this update is for the p1000 only and not the p1010 , this sucks, anyone have info regarding the p1010 update , samsung are mute on the issue.

  • Bryanbblack

Still haven’t seen it in the uk. It is long past mid may.

  • Muscathouse

Free over the Air (FOTA) is available in UK but when I went through instructions it asks me to click on Update in About Phone section….which does not show on my Tab. As I bought my Tab outside UK, I guess they have limited it to UK bought Tabs only…but, from earlier comments, it’s not even that simple. When you try email support in UK, even that option not available.
