How to root the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1

The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 has been rooted. It is extremely easy to root your tablet once you have ClockworkMod installed on your device. Please make sure to install ClockworkMod before attempting to root using this method.

Step 1: Download cwm-root-gtab2.zip onto your Galaxy Tab 2 10.1.
Step 2: Boot into Clockwork Mod Recovery by holding the volume down button while the tablet boots up. Then press volume down to move the selection to the left and volume up to select it. You can also use ADB to boot into recovery if this does not work.
Step 3: Toggle down to “install zip from sdcard” using the volume keys and select it with the power button.
Step 4: Toggle to “choose zip from sdcard” and find the cwm-root-gtab2.zip you downloaded earlier.

Now you have root access on your tablet. Look in your app list for Superuser to confirm that the root process worked.

How to install ClockworkMod Recovery on the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1

The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 came out over the weekend and now ClockworkMod recovery is available to be installed on it. ClockworkMod is a custom recovery that allows for backing up your device, installing custom ROMs, rooting and more.

Step 1: Download the Odin
Step 2: Download recovery.tar.md5
Step 3: Boot your Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 into Download Mode by holding the volume down button while your tablet just turns on. Then press volume up to select Download Mode and volume down to continue. You can also use ADB to boot into Download Mode.
Step 4: Open Odin and plug your Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 into your computer.
Step 5: Click PDA and select the recovery.tar.md5 file you downloaded earlier.
Step 6: Click start.

Be sure to check XDA for more up to date links if these ever go down.

Now that you have ClockworkMod Recovery, you can root your tablet using this tutorial.

Quad-core Exynos Galaxy Note 10.1 benchmarks

The Galaxy Note 10.1 was announced some time ago, but still is not available. It seems fair to assume that Samsung has decided to remake it with the latest specs. Benchmarks were spotted for the quad-core version of the Galaxy Note 10.1 and you can view them in the image below.

The results show that the GPU in the Galaxy Note 10.1 is nearly twice as powerful as the recently announced Galaxy S III and over four times as powerful as the ASUS Transformer Prime. Personally, I cannot wait until the next Galaxy Tab or this new Galaxy Note gets announced. I hope the Galaxy Note takes over the Galaxy Tab line because the S Pen is extremely useful.

Two Galaxy Tabs get listed on “Engadget’s tablet buyer’s guide: spring 2012 edition”

Engadget just posted its tablet buyer’s guide for spring and the Galaxy Tab line was listed three times. Only two Galaxy Tabs are on the list though – Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and the Galaxy Tab 7.7. The Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 is listed on the the budget category and the Galaxy Tab 7.7 is listed under both the 7 inch category and the 3G/4G category.

You can buy the Wi-Fi Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 on Amazon for $249, the unlocked GSM Galaxy Tab 7.7 on Amazon for $595, and the Verizon Galaxy Tab 7.7 on Amazon for $599.99.

GalaxyTabs.com has come a long way from when it launched back in August 2010. The traffic rapidly increased until August 2011 when it started to settle. Last month, April, saw 38,711 unique visitors visiting the site 51,896 times for a total of 125,959 pageviews. The most popular month GalaxyTabs.com has ever seen was January 2012. January brought in 60,334 unique visitors for 79,095 visits and 178,978 pageviews.

This website is not just popular in the United States, where I am located, but in many countries. Only 20.86% of traffic is from the United States. The next highest is the United Kingdom at 4.46%. The USA definitely brings a lot more traffic than any other single country, but only accounts for 1/5 of the total.

Search queries on search engines like Google were responsible for 69.83% of the traffic in April. Direct traffic, which accounts for traffic brought from typing the URL in the address bar and opening bookmarks, drove 23.74% of the traffic. 5.38% came from other websites (including Facebook and Twitter) linking to GalaxyTabs.com and the remaining 1.06% came from RSS feeds.

In April, 36.22% of the traffic came from mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. The top 5 mobile devices were the Galaxy Tab 10.1, iPad, original Galaxy Tab, iPhone, and Galaxy Tab 8.9.

This website is almost entirely a one man operation and is my part time job while I attend college full time. I want to be able to do this full time though. That is why I am trying to expand my portfolio of websites. The current website that I am trying to gain popularity with is TabletDigger.com. It is meant to be just like GalaxyTabs.com, but for all tablets.

Live wallpapers is one of the many advantages Android has over iOS on the iPad. I have found three free live wallpapers that ran well on my Galaxy Tab 10.1 and looked attractive.

Live wallpapers can drain your battery and impact performance, but they can also be appealing eye candy.

The first of these wallpapers is called Spectrum ICS LWP. It was inspired by the Ice Cream Sandwich stock wallpaper and is my favorite of the three. There are limited settings for customization on the free version, but the full version is only $1.19. The free version has settings to improve the graphics quality in exchange for possibly lowered performance. The improved graphics ran smoothly on my overclocked Galaxy Tab 10.1 with CM9 though.

The second live wallpaper is Galactic Core Live Wallpaper. The free version gives you a nice swirling galaxy with no settings. Swiping up and down will give you a slightly different view of it. The paid version is only $0.99 if you want some customization settings and themes.

The third and last live wallpaper is Pixel Rain Live Wallpaper. It comes with a whole host of settings for customizing how you want it to look, from the color of the rain to the splash effect when it hits the ground. The paid version is $1.49 and comes with not only pixel rain but pixel snow and pixel leaves too!

T-Mobile Galaxy Tabs to get Ice Cream Sandwich update

We have already heard Samsung’s plan for Wi-Fi Galaxy Tabs and several other carriers, but T-Mobile was glaringly absent. Now the T-Mobile plans are finally out and the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 will both receive upgrades to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The only question left is how long until it is released.

How to install ASUS’s day scene live wallpaper and weather widget

If you have been jealous of ASUS tablet owners because of their nature live wallpaper and weather widget, then today is your lucky day. You can download both of these apps onto your tablet – download the wallpaper here and the widget here.

Installing them is very simple. Try to open the .apk files on your Galaxy Tab and it will prompt you to install. If it tells you to allow unknown sources in settings, then make sure to do that too. After they are installed, you can add them to your homescreen like you normally would.

Long-pressing on the weather widget will allow you resize it to display the forecast.

The live wallpaper has three display modes: slideshow, wallpaper, and timeline. Slideshow mode will switch between the different nature scenes after a user-set amount of time. Wallpaper mode will let you choose which of the scenes you want to be your wallpaper. I assume that timeline mode will change based on the time of day, but it has not been long enough for me to know for sure.

How to return to stock software on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 Wi-Fi (USA)

Many power users install custom ROMs and overclocked kernels to get the most out of their tablets. The problem with tweaking your device is that you will not be able to download any official builds and updates from Samsung until you return back to stock software. This tutorial can also be helpful if you have installed custom software incorrectly and your device is not working properly.

This is for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 Wi-Fi (USA). Different countries use slightly different firmware so make sure that you only follow this tutorial if you have the USA variant. I am not sure what it will do to tablets from different countries.

Always back up everything first!

Step 1: Download the files here.
Step 2: Unzip the files and place them somewhere on your computer.
Step 3: Boot your tablet into download mode. First turn off your tablet. Then turn it back on while holding the volume down button until you see two Android logos. Press the volume down button until the right logo is selected. Press the volume up button to click it. Press the volume up button again to continue.
Step 4: Plug your Galaxy Tab 10.1 into your computer.
Step 5: Open Odin3_v1.85.exe. It is in a zipped archive called ODIN3_v1.85 inside of the folder where you extracted the zip you downloaded earlier.
Step 6: Press the PDA button in Odin and select P7510XABKMP_P7510UEKMP_HOME.tar.
Step 7: Press start and wait for it to finish.
Step 8: Once it has finished and rebooted, turn off your tablet and boot into recovery. This is similar to how you got into download mode, but this time select the left logo.
Step 9: Select wipe data/factory reset. Use the volume rocker to navigate and the power button to select.
Step 10: Select wipe cache partition.

You should now have stock firmware with no root access. This tutorial is an edited version of this post on XDA. Check there for more up to date files.
