Root your Galaxy Tab with a simple app
In order to harness the full power of any Android device, it is necessary to root it. The Galaxy Tab is no exception. Rooting is a confusing and scary thing to many people, especially non-geeks. There is no need to be worried using z4root.

First go ahead and download the app from XDA. Next open the app. There are two options, Temporary Root and Permanent Root. Only choose Temporary Root if you only need to use a rooted application once, otherwise choose Permanent Root. Once you click it, your Tab will restart.
Now you have full root access.

App of the Week – Dolphin HD

This weeks app is Dolphin HD, a replacement to your default browser app. I myself am I recent convert, but I can’t see myself switching back.

Dolphin HD is not noticeably faster or slower in loading web pages, but it is faster at navigating the web page after it has been loaded. The default browser app loads a checkered-box pattern in areas that aren’t cached. Dolphin HD on the other hand doesn’t ever show checkered-box patterns.
Double-tapping a paragraph in Android zooms in and formats the text to fill the screen. Dolphin HD is much faster than the default app at this.
Dolphin HD is theme-able, add-on-able, gesture-command-able, tab-able, and so much more!
You can download it by searching on the Android Market for Dolphin HD, using the QR code, or by clicking this link on your Galaxy Tab.

List of apps optimized for the Galaxy Tab
Recently I made a post about apps that do not scale up to the Galaxy Tab’s resolution. One of the comments on the post recommended a list of apps that are optimized for the Galaxy Tab. Unfortunately this list is short, but hopefully you can help me find a few more apps optimized for the Tab.

BlinkerTab
Financial Times
NYTimes for Android tablet
Popular Science+ Top Tech 2010
SiMi Clock Widget
The Wall Street Journal
I should also mention that these are not necessarily good apps. As always use your own discretion when downloading apps.

Opera teases a new version of their browser for the Tab
Opera recently teased a new version of their web browser built specifically for Android tablets. They demonstrated it on the Galaxy Tab, so it will work perfectly on it.
The video below looks way faster than the default browser and just as smooth. If this video is anything like the real-life performance, there is a good chance that it will be my new default browser.

WiFi-Only Galaxy Tab finally gets official

For a long time there has been speculation about the WiFi-only Tab, but have not seen any official announcements. Samsung did mention that one was eventually coming, but no date.
We still have no launch date or price, but it is safe to assume that it will be launched soon. As far as pricing goes, it could be as high as $499. I could see it go as low as $400 though to be competitive. Especially if Samsung plans on launching the Galaxy Tab 2 soon.
The specs will be exactly the same, except for the 3G connectivity of course. It will launch with Froyo 2.2, but will be upgraded to Gingerbread 3.0 shortly after.

Verizon launching refreshed Galaxy Tab with LTE and 1.2 GHz

CES is full of surprises, good ones so far. Verizon just announced that it is launching a new version of the Galaxy Tab on their 4G LTE network. Of course it will also work on their 3G network.
Additionally Verizon and Samsung felt the need to increase the camera’s resolution from 3 to 5 MP. This is a welcome increase. The camera never seemed to impress me, but hopefully this one will.
The last upgrade, and my personal favorite, is an upgraded Hummingbird processor. It will no longer be sitting at the industry standard of 1 GHz, but instead be bumped up to 1.2 GHz. That is a healthly 20% increase.
Are you going to ditch your Tab and jump onto Verizon’s ship? Or are you waiting for the Galaxy Tab 2?

Honeycomb 3.0 shown off at CES, Exclusively for tablets (Video)
Google finally decides to give us an official preview of the OS that all Galaxy Tab owners have been dying for, Honeycomb. In the video, it says that the new OS was built entirely for tablet.

Instantly you can tell that this is unlike any Android OS you have seen before. Sure there are widgets, but the whole user interface has changed, in a good way. The UI is packed with 3D transitions and other cool effects.
The new and improved apps in the video include, Gmail, Google Talk, Google Books, Google Chrome, and YouTube. Gmail has been optimized for tablets in the same way that Samsung optimized the mail app for the Tab. Google Talk now supports video chat. Google Books looks much more polished. Google Chrome actually has tabs at the top. YouTube has a cool 3D effect with the videos.
Why are you even reading this? Just go watch the video!
PS – Samsung has not promised to upgrade the Tab to 3.0, but all future Tabs will definitely be!
