Galaxy Tab Case Giveaway – Aegis by Trident Case

What another giveaway already? Yes. This time we are giving away a practically new Aegis Case away, a $30 value. I say practically new because it was used for a few days for reviewing purposes.

Review

Pros
Comfortable
Two part design offers great protection
Cons
Frustrating to put on
Flimsy port covers
8/10

A few days ago I unboxed this case and the more I used it the more I liked it. At first it did not exude an awe factor and made me think negatively about it.

The case has two parts, a soft rubber case inside of a harder plastic shell. Its hard plastic shell comes in six different colors – blue, yellow, black, red, pink, and ballistic green.

Putting the case on is frustrating to say the least. The shell has to be forced over the soft silicon and then you have to make sure all the ports are lined up correctly. For the first five minutes my Galaxy Tab was booting on and off because the case was not completely on and was holding down the power button.

Aegis by Trident Case Review

Another concern with the case is the port covers. They are difficult to open and some seem as they might break after a month or so. None have torn off yet for me thankfully. The flimsiest cover is the one covering 3.5 mm jack. Thankfully it is the least used port on my Tab so it can stay closed. The power and volume rocker is noticeably harder to use with the case on. Conversely, having all of the ports completely covered can be a good thing as it will undoubtedly save them from dirt or water damage.

There is no denying that the case feels comfortable in the hand. The hard plastic shell has a sort of soft touch feel to it and the silicone areas are obviously soft. My Galaxy Tab is far more comfortable in the case than ‘naked.’

Pros
Comfortable
Two part design offers great protection
Cons
Frustrating to put on
Flimsy port covers

Style-wise, this case is a fairly good looker. Nothing you would look twice at, but still easy on the eyes. Though I have noticed that the black rubber areas either attract dust and dirt or just show it off more.

As stated before the case is protected very well and covers all of the ports. This also helps with drop protection. All four corners have the black rubber exposed which will greatly reduce the chance of damage from drops. Also the case has a small lip on the front of the device that will prevent the screen from touching the ground in the event of the Tab falling screen first. It also means that you can leave it face down on a table if you desire.

Just like with anything, the case has its downfalls, but overall I do not think that you can go wrong with this case. You can buy it on Amazon or TridentCase.com for $30.

App of the Week – Amazon App Store

I have had a roller coaster relationship with the Amazon App Store, but today it has found its way to App of the Week.

Amazon’s new app store is the second largest source for Android apps. They did a really good job of getting developers to add their apps to the market.

There really is not a reason to make this your primary app store, but it is worth having. Every day Amazon discounts one paid app to the low price of $0.00. So far these apps have been popular and high quality apps from the Android Market – X Construction, SoundHound Infinity, and Angry Birds Rio to name a few.

Unfortunately, it is only available to people in the United States of America for the time being. There are plans to release it to the rest of the world though. Until then you are stuck with the far superior Android Market, but do not get awesome free apps daily.

Download the Amazon App Store here.

No need to spoil the fun of watching the video with a description, so just watch it!

So do not tell anybody, but we might just be giving away this case very soon. Keep it under your hat.

We have been hearing a lot about the long awaited WiFi-only Galaxy Tab recently. Samsung has finally come out with a release date and price. It will be available Sunday, April 10th for $350. At that price point, how can you turn it down?

The Wi-Fi tablet will carry the GT-P1010/W16 model number and have nearly identical specs to all of the other Galaxy Tabs save the 3G radios. Check out the full specs on Samsung’s website.

It will only have one color option, black front with white back. The same that the international and Sprint models are already rocking.

Are you planning on picking up one of these $350 tablets?

Honeycomb Port for GSM Galaxy Tabs Breaks Ground

This is based off of the same work done by spacemoose1 for the CDMA Tabs. A russian developer has compiled a kernel and rom for use on GSM Tabs. A simple way to check if your Galaxy Tab is GSM or CDMA is by checking for a SIM card slot. GSM devices have one and CDMA devices lack one.

Obviously proceed with caution if you want to alpha test the glorious Android 3.0 port. The port is anything but functional at its current stage.

The development post originated on a Russian website, but I recommend checking out the XDA thread regarding the port for non-Russian speakers.

Free Beautiful Looking Weather Widgets

You are bound to find some treats if you browse XDA long enough. I found some beautiful weather widgets based off of the MIUI design. MIUI is one of my favorite skins of all time. It is made by a Chinese company for knockoff iPhones, but looks fantastic!

The widget is still in beta, so it is a bit buggy. For instance, clicking on the widget brings up a more detailed weather overlay that does not scale up completely to the Galaxy Tab.

There are two different widget styles as you can see from the image to the left – one with a clock and one without. Both are included in the package so you can choose whichever one fits your needs.

Currently theses widgets are only available in the United States and Europe. The developers are working hard to getting weather information for other cities around the world so stay tuned.

Head over to the XDA Forums to download and install. The .apks are attached at the bottom of the first post and you need to be registered to download. There are six different .apks, one for Europe and five for the US broken up into different state ranges.

Enjoy.
