Amazon to show some love to the Galaxy Tab, other tablets

I tuned into Engadget this morning a post about Android tablets getting a better Kindle application. The Kindle application seems fairly robust to me, but I never use it as I’m not a big reader.
They don’t really spill any specific details on how this app will be different from the one already available on the Android Market. It is safe to assume though that is will have a better UI that takes advantage of larger screens.
Are you excited about a new Kindle app, or do you not use your Tab to read books either?

App of the Week – Gem Miner

I am trying to bring to light apps that you haven’t heard of. There is not much of a point in telling you about an app that you potentially already use. This week I found a game called Gem Miner.
The first good thing about this game is it scales up properly to the Galaxy Tab’s resolution, unlike some apps.
This game reminded me of an Indie game on Xbox Live Arcade that I thoroughly enjoyed, Miner Dig Deep. The goal is essentially the same, mine downwards into the earth, collect minerals and bring them back up. If you stay in the mines too long, then you run out of stamina and have to be rescued (basically you die). You can also die from falling from too high or having a rock fall on you. To prevent a rock from landing on you, there are support beams you can place.

When you bring minerals to the surface, you receive money from the store. With that money you can buy upgrades for your light, backpack, stamina, and more!
The game doesn’t have much longevity, since once you mine the whole cavern there isn’t anything to do. But you can’t complain about an hour or two of free fun! Use the QR code, search for Gem Miner in the Android Market, or if you are on your Tab use this link to download.

Bypass activation on your Galaxy Tab for WiFi-only use

Many Galaxy Tab owners, such as myself, do not want to pay for an extra data plan. Instead they want to just use the faster WiFi that they already have in their house. This can be done without activation, but the Tab will continually prompt you to activate it, which becomes increasingly annoying. To prevent yourself from throwing your expensive tablet through the wall, follow this simple tutorial.
- Press Volume Up once
- Press Volume Down twice
- Press Volume Up thrice
- Press Volume Down four times
This does work on the Verizon variant, but does not work on the Sprint one. A future tutorial will be released for the Sprint Tab. Unfortunately, it is much more complex.

Verizon getting aggressive with Galaxy Tab pricing? Now only $499 without contract?

According to this leaked promotional photo, Big Red has decided to drop the Tab down from $599 to $499. At this price point Apple must be getting scared. The $499 iPad has 16 GB of storage, and now the $499 Galaxy Tab has 16 GB of storage and 3G!
You might be thinking, “Big deal, US Cellular has the Tab for $199 on two-year contract.” While that is true, this price come to you contract-less!
The icing on the cake is $60 in movie rentals via either Samsung’s Media Hub or Blockbusters app.
There are also reports of stores willing to refund you the $100 if you bought the Tab at the previous price of $599 in the past two weeks.
Cross your fingers that this comes to fruition.

List of apps that don’t scale up to the Galaxy Tab’s resolution
This is going to be a living, breathing list of apps that are not compatible with the Galaxy Tab’s resolution. The vast majority of the popular apps scale up flawlessly, but many developers refuse to adapt. Hopefully seeing their app listed here will encourage them to take the time to update.

Archos vs Galaxy Tab according to Engadget’s reviews
So several people have made it very clear that they think the Archos 101 and 70 are better than the Galaxy Tab. Truly this confused the heck out of me. I sought another’s opinion.
Here is their breakdown of the tablets.
Archos 101 6/10
The Good
- Very thin design with built-in kickstand
- USB and mini-HDMI ports
- Over seven hours of battery life
The Bad
- Discolored screen with poor viewing angles
- Performance can be sluggish at times
- Flimsy build
Archos 70 6/10
The Good
- Very thin and light
- Responsive capacitive touchscreen
- Great media playback
The Bad
- Crappy LCD with poor viewing angles
- Hardware feels cheap
- Sluggish at times
Galaxy Tab 7/10
The Good
- Compact and extremely solid build
- Great quality 7-inch, capacitive touchscreen
- Two cameras
The Bad
- Not all apps scale to the screen
- Little support from Google
- No decent video calling software
The Archos tablets have hardware issues under The Bad, but the Galaxy Tab only has software issues that are present in the Archos tablets as well. Software will be updated. Hardware can’t be updated.

App of the Week – Audio Galaxy

If you love music, then 16 GB of storage just won’t cut it. You could of course pick up a 32 GB microSD card, but why do that when there is a perfectly good, free app. This app of course is Audio Galaxy.

The way this app works is by installing a simple program that scans your computer for music and tells Audio Galaxy what music you own. Then Audio Galaxy will let you stream music from anywhere on your Galaxy Tab, as long as your computer is on.
Go ahead and sign up at AudioGalaxy.com and see for yourself how wonderful it is.

Who got the Galaxy Tab for Christmas?

Who would not be psyched to see a tablet shaped package under the tree. I know I would! Now imagine it was just an Archos tablet. Don’t cry, this is just a hypothetical.
Really though, did you get the Galaxy Tab for Chirstmas?
