US Cellular now has the Tab for $199

Who wants a Galaxy Tab for under $200? Everybody. Head over to your local US Cellular store and go pick one up. You will be locked into a 2-year contract though.

The minimum plan necessary is the 5GB Tablet Data Plan for $55. After two years the total cost of the Galaxy Tab will be $1520.

That certainly seems like a good deal to me.

App of the Week – Android Market

This week we bring you the Android Market for App of the Week. It is by no means a new app, but it has been recently updated in the past week. Besides a new look a feel, it features new categories and a single page design for app information.

No longer are we plagued with a plain looking design. Instead there is a big green featured app section that takes up half of the screen. This is no problem for Galaxy Tab owners like us since our screens are massive. Flipping the Tab sideways switches it to a landscape orientation with two columns.

The Market should update itself sometime this week. If it has not already, there are ways to install it. We do not recommend doing this though since the update will come in the next few days anyway and installing it manually could cause problems down the road.

Galaxy Tab vs Archos 101 vs Archos 70. Which is best for me?

The reason for this post is simply because a significant portion of hits to Galaxy Tabs are from Google searches involving Archos and Galaxy Tab. I feel that the comparison charts are not sufficient enough for the large amount of traffic. Here is the breakdown of the tablets.

Price

If price is the most important thing to you, then you can stop reading right now and buy an Archos 101 or 70. Keep in mind, though, that the adage of, “You get what you pay for,” holds true here. The Archos 101 retails at $300 USD, Archos 70 at $275 USD, and the Galaxy Tab costs ~$600 USD.

Build Quality

Archos has really stepped up their game with their latest generation of tablets. They still have quite a ways to go to compete with the Tab, though. It feels light in the hand and very plasticy. The Galaxy Tab, on the other hand, feels much more solid.

Perhaps you heard about the “table” debacle. The first Archos 101 tablets this year were shipping with Table branding instead of Tablet. It was an embarrassment that it wasn’t caught earlier and a testament to their build quality.

Screens

This is another place where you could stop reading, if screen size is the most important criteria. If you want a 10 inch screen, then go ahead and get the Archos 101 since there is no 10 inch Galaxy Tab model yet. On the other hand, if screen quality is more important, then the Galaxy Tab can’t be beat. Its TFT LCD screen is amazingly crisp with unbelievable viewing angles. Archos’s screens suffer from extremely poor viewing angles.

Native Market Support

Samsung made sure to follow all of Google’s regulations to allow Android Market support. Archos, on the other hand, launched without the Market. Of course, there is nothing stopping you from downloading the Market hack, but it’s a pain that you need to hack your device just to get decent apps.

Android Buttons

Archos’s implementation of the array of Android buttons (Home, Menu, Back, Search) really bothers me. Neither the Tab nor the Archos has physical buttons, but the Archos doesn’t even have dedicated space for the capacitive buttons. Instead, Archos put them right on the screen. This may not bother you, but it drives me crazy.

Ports

The Archos devices win this round hands down. They have ports galore, including HDMI out and a USB host. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab can only use HDMI via the dock.

Mobile Internet

If being able to use your device on the run is crucial to your decision, the Galaxy Tab is for you. It supports 3G on just about any carrier in the world, while the Archos 101 and Archos 70 only function on WiFi.

Verdict

The Archos 101 and 70 are impressive devices, but I could never recommend them with something like the Galaxy Tab on the market. If you are really strapped for cash, then you can get one of Archos’s offerings, but I would recommend that you save up for the Galaxy Tab. It will last longer and be a more pleasant experience!
